Horrible và Horrific – Terrible và Terrific

Trên phía trên là một thắc mắc khá hóc búa và chúng ta thậm chí hiểu vì như thế sao chúng ta lại mang thắc mắc này. Cả bốn đều là tính từ và trong tiếng Anh thường xuyên sở hữu những cặp tính từ mang cùng gốc.

Những từ mà chúng ta hỏi thì trông như là chúng cũng theo cùng một kiểu như vậy nhưng thực ra lại ko phải như vậy.

Horrible và horrific đều liên quan tới danh từ horror

Horror tức là nỗi kinh hoàng, sự hoảng hốt hãi kinh hoàng. Vì như thế thế thế nếu chúng ta nói một chiếc gì đó horrific thì sẽ tức là nó làm chúng ta hoảng hốt hãi kinh hoàng. Chúng ta thậm chí nói tới a horrific war – một trận chiến kinh hoàng, hay a horrific illness – một chứng bệnh đáng kinh hoàng.

Horrible thậm chí mang nghĩa tương tự như horriffic và nó cũng đều phải sở hữu một nghĩa khác nữa. Nó cũng thậm chí sử dụng để diễn tả điều gì đó kinh khủng, ghê gớm, đáng hoảng hốt. Vì như thế thế thế chúng ta thậm chí nói tới a horrible traffic accident – một tai vạ giao thông kinh khủng, hay chúng ta thậm chí nói: “Ugh. This coffee is horrible” – Eo ơi, cốc cafe này ghê quá.

Và để vấn đáp thắc mắc của người tiêu sử dụng là từ nào mạnh hơn thì horrific mang nghĩa mạnh hơn là horrible, nếu chúng ta nói tới a horrific war thì nó mang nghĩa kinh khủng hơn a horrible war.

Mặt khác chúng ta cũng nên nhớ rằng horrible thường được sử dụng nhiều hơn thế thế nữa trong cuộc sống đời thường đời thường hằng ngày trong tiếng Anh nói. Horrificthường sử dụng trong ngữ cảnh trịnh trọng hơn, và thường thấy trên văn viết như báo chí hay trong sách chứ ít thấy trong văn nói.

Terrible và terrific

Chúng ta thậm chí nghĩ là hai từ này cũng đều phải sở hữu gốc từ là terror và cũng đều phải sở hữu liên quan với nhau tương tự horrible và horrific nhưng trên thực tiễn trong tiếng Anh văn minh thì ko phải như vậy.

Chúng ta thậm chí sử dụng từ terrible trong những cách sau trên phía trên:

Terrible mang cả nghĩa tương tự horrible, vì như thế thế thế chúng ta thậm chí nói về a terrible accident, a terrible cup of coffee.

Chúng ta cũng thậm chí sử dụng terrible với nghĩa rất chung, diễn tả ý là rất tồi, rất chán, ko ra gì, ko hay như trong những ví dụ sau: This movie is terrible hay This actor is terrible.

Trong lúc đó terrific thường được sử dụng với nghĩa là rất tuyệt, tuyệt vời, ngược hẳn với terrible như trong những ví dụ sau: This homework is terrific và nó ngược nghĩa với This homework is terrible.

Terrific cũng thậm chí được sử dụng để diễn tả ý very strong, very intense như trong ví dụ: terrific speed – this car is travelling at terrific speed.

Tóm lại mang lẽ chúng ta nên nghĩ tới bốn từ này như những từ riêng lẻ với những nghĩa ko giống nhau.

Okay, so you”re right: this is a particularly tricky question, and I can understand to reasons why you ask it. The words you spoke about are all adjectives – these four words horrible, horrific, terrible, terrific – they”re all adjectives, and as you know, often, English adjectives go in pairs or groups, and we can find patterns in their meanings.

So, for example, we have:

bored and boring

interested and interesting

The words that you asked about, they look as though – they look lượt thích they followed some kind of pattern lượt thích this, but in fact, I”m afraid they don”t.

“Horrible” and “horrific” are both related to the noun “horror”…

“Horror” means strong fear, or shock, or repulsion. So, if we say that something is “horrific”, that means that it makes us feel horror. We might talk about “a horrific war” for example, or “a horrific illness“.

“Horrible” can mean the same as “horrific” in fact, or it has a different meaning also. It can also mean unpleasant or disgusting – so we could talk about “a horrible traffic accident“, or we might say something lượt thích,”Ugh! This coffee is horrible!”

And to answer your question about which word is stronger, horrific is stronger generally – if we talk about “a horrific war”, that”s stronger than “a horrible war”. On the other hand, it”s also important to remember that “horrible” is more often used in normal everyday spoken English. “Horrific” is a slightly more formal word. You can expect to read it in newspapers or books, but it”s less commonly used in conversation.

And then, “terrible” and “terrific”….

You might think that these are connected to terror in the same way that “horrible” and “horrific” are connected to horror, but in fact in modern English this isn”t true – I”m afraid they”re not.

So you can use “terrible” in several different ways:

“Terrible” has both the meanings of “horrible”, so we can talk about:

“A terrible accident” or

“A terrible cup of coffee“.

We can also use it – excuse me – with very general meaning, meaning just very bad. So you could say:

“This movie is terrible” or

“This actor is terrible“.

On the other hand, “terrific” is most often used to mean “very good”, so:

“This homework is terrific” and that”s the opposite of

“This homework is terrible“.

“Terrific” can also mean “very strong” or “very intense”, so we can talk about “terrific speed”

– you could say:

“The car is travelling at terrific speed.”

So, I”m afraid there is no very clear pattern in the meanings of these four words. The best way to understand them I think, is to think about them separately – as four separate words with separate meanings. I can”t give you any more clear rule than that to help you understand them
